PRTG alternative

A PRTG alternative that licenses devices, not sensors

One license per unique IP. Every interface, sensor, and element on that device is included — NetFlow, NCM, maps, alerting, and reports in the same on-premises console.

What you get

What this ZenPlus module gives your operations team

Purpose-built workflows that map to how operators actually work — not a placeholder surface, but a real, documented part of the ZenPlus console.

  • Cost that does not grow when you add a port — a 48-port core switch is one ZenPlus license
  • On-premises data: telemetry, credentials, and reports stay inside your boundary
  • One operator path for device health, interface utilization, flow, config backup, and alerts
  • Built as a PRTG replacement, not as a cloud APM with an SNMP probe bolted on

Live-system proof

  • Live ZenPlus operations, NetFlow, NCM, and alerting screens were captured from the evaluated system for this comparison.

Capabilities

Everything in PRTG alternative, organized the way you operate

Each group below is a working area of the module — from day-one setup to deep operational drill-downs.

Why teams leave PRTG sensor caps

  • Sensor count is the reason you are in a licensing ticket every quarter
  • A core switch should cost one license, not 48
  • You want NPM + NetFlow + NCM in one on-prem console without a module shopping list
  • Air-gap, customer-controlled telemetry, or on-prem AI assistance is a requirement, not a slide

Paessler PRTG is a capable on-premises monitor. The problem most teams hit is not the product. It is the sensor: one license unit per ping, per CPU, per disk, and — by Paessler’s own guidance — one sensor per switch port. A 48-port core switch is one device in the rack and dozens of sensors on the invoice.

ZenPlus licenses the same way the NOC thinks: one license per unique IP. Every interface, sensor, and element on that device is included. NetFlow, NCM, maps, alerting, and reports sit in the same console, on-premises.

What a PRTG alternative has to get right

PRTG teams are not looking for “another dashboard.” They are looking for three things:

  1. Cost that does not grow when you add a port. Paessler documents that a sensor is one monitored aspect of a device (CPU, disk, port traffic) and that teams typically need about 5–10 sensors per device, with one sensor per switch port.
  2. On-premises data. PRTG can stay on-prem. So can ZenPlus. The replacement has to keep telemetry, credentials, and reports inside your boundary.
  3. One operator path. Device health, interface utilization, flow, config backup, and alerts without a second product and a second license conversation.

ZenPlus is built for that replacement. See also the device vs sensor licensing guide. OSS peers: LibreNMS alternative, Zabbix alternative. See also the Observium alternative.

Comparison

Sensors vs devices: the licensing difference

Paessler PRTG Network Monitor ZenPlus (Zentryc)
License unit Sensor (one aspect of a device) Device (one unique IP)
Switch ports Typically 1 sensor per port (Paessler) Unlimited interfaces on that IP
Typical density ~5–10 sensors per device (Paessler) Not metered
Published 2026 list (100-device class) PRTG 1000: $358/mo paid annually (~1,000 sensors, “about 100 devices”) Professional: $5/device/mo, 10% off at 100+ → $4.50/device/mo ($5,400/year)
Published 2026 list (250-device class) PRTG 2500: $742/mo paid annually Professional 250 devices, 15% off → $12,750/year
Contract shape Subscription; Paessler shop sells 3-year terms with annual billing Annual per-device, volume discounts automatic
Free tier Freeware: 100 sensors (~10 devices) Free: 10 devices, unlimited elements on each
Trial 30 days, unrestricted sensors 30 days, full tier, no credit card
NCM / config backup Not a productized NCM module Included in Professional
NetFlow / sFlow / IPFIX / J-Flow Flow sensors consume the sensor pool Included in Professional, not a sensor add-on
APM / OpenTelemetry Not the same product Included in Enterprise
HA Separate conversation at enterprise scale Included in Enterprise
Deployment On-prem (and hosted options) On-prem on every plan; air-gap on Enterprise

PRTG list prices: Paessler public pricing as of August 2026, paid annually. Device guidance (“about 50 / 100 / 250 devices”) is Paessler’s, and only holds if you stay inside the sensor cap. ZenPlus prices: zentryc.com/pricing. Regional taxes, resellers, and negotiated contracts vary.

Worked example

Worked example (honest math)

Estate: 40 × 24-port access switches + 10 routers + 20 servers = 70 devices.

Using Paessler’s own rules of thumb (one sensor per switch port, plus a handful of device sensors):

If your network is 20 ICMP-only devices and almost no port-level traffic, PRTG 500 at $200/mo can be cheaper than ZenPlus Professional. The crossover is interface-dense networks, which is most campus and data-center fabrics.

  • 40 switches × 24 ports = 960 port-traffic sensors
  • 40 switches × 3 device sensors (ping / CPU / memory) = 120
  • 10 routers × 8 = 80
  • 20 servers × 6 = 120
  • Total ≈ 1,280 sensors → PRTG 2500 at $742/mo = $8,904/year
  • Same estate on ZenPlus Professional: 70 devices × $5 × 12 = $4,200/year
  • Every switch port, NetFlow, and NCM included in that tier — no sensor-cap upgrade when you enable the 25th interface on a stack

When to stay on PRTG

Stay if most of these are true:

  • You are well under your sensor cap and port-level monitoring is light.
  • The Windows console, sensor library, and existing maps are muscle memory for the whole team.
  • You do not need productized NCM, flow analytics as a first-class module, or OpenTelemetry in the same appliance.
  • A 3-year subscription is already paid and you are not in a renewal fight.

ZenPlus is the better PRTG alternative when

  • Sensor count is the reason you are in a licensing ticket every quarter.
  • A core switch should cost one license, not 48.
  • You want NPM + NetFlow + NCM in one on-prem console without a module shopping list.
  • Air-gap, customer-controlled telemetry, or on-prem AI assistance is a requirement, not a slide.

Migration

How a PRTG migration actually runs

Zentryc does not charge a migration license. Device count on the quote is unique IPs, not ports.

  1. Inventory sensors, not just devices. Export the sensor tree. Count port-traffic sensors. That number is the business case.
  2. Stand up ZenPlus on a VM (Ubuntu 22.04/24.04, one-line installer). Free tier covers 10 devices forever; paid eval is 30 days full-feature.
  3. Point SNMP, WMI/WinRM, and flow exporters at the appliance. Discovery and maps come up in the same console.
  4. Run both for 2–4 weeks. Compare alert noise, interface coverage, and the quote: sensors vs IPs.
  5. Cut over notifications (email, channels) and retire PRTG sensors in batches, starting with the densest switches.

FAQ

PRTG alternative FAQ

For network, server, flow, maps, alerting, reports, and (on Professional) NCM: yes, that is the intended replacement. PRTG’s huge third-party sensor catalog is broader in places. If you depend on a niche sensor that is not SNMP, WMI, flow, SSH, or OpenTelemetry, flag it in the demo.
Yes. Every plan deploys on-premises. Enterprise adds air-gapped deployment. Telemetry, credentials, and reports stay on infrastructure you control.
One unique IP you monitor = one ZenPlus license, unlimited interfaces and elements. In PRTG, CPU, disk, ping, and each port traffic check are separate sensors.
Useful for a lab. ZenPlus Free monitors 10 devices with unlimited elements on each, which is often more coverage on a small switch than 100 sensors.
PRTG figures are Paessler’s published USD list as of August 2026 (monthly, paid annually). Always re-check paessler.com/pricing and zentryc.com/pricing before a purchase decision.
