Observium alternative

An Observium alternative when SNMP graphs aren’t the whole NOC

ZenPlus is the other shape of answer: an on-premises appliance for devices, interfaces, servers, NetFlow, maps, alerting, NCM, and (on Enterprise) OpenTelemetry APM—licensed per unique IP, with vendor onboarding and a single operator language.

What you get

What this ZenPlus module gives your operations team

Purpose-built workflows that map to how operators actually work — not a placeholder surface, but a real, documented part of the ZenPlus console.

  • Observium already covers SNMP polling and graphs, but NCM, NetFlow as a NOC workflow, APM, or HA are adjacent projects
  • Leadership wants a named vendor and a productized console for migrations and severity-1 ownership
  • You still need on-premises telemetry and credentials—no SaaS NPM as the default
  • Productized NetFlow + NCM in the same console, with Enterprise APM and HA when the NOC needs them

Live-system proof

  • Observium remains a credible network monitor with a clear Community → Professional → Enterprise ladder. This comparison is about total cost of ownership and productized NOC scope, not trashing a healthy deployment.

Capabilities

Everything in Observium alternative, organized the way you operate

Each group below is a working area of the module — from day-one setup to deep operational drill-downs.

What teams actually outgrow in Observium

  • Config backup living in RANCID (or similar) with a separate ownership model
  • Flow / capacity workflows that are not the same shape as a SolarWinds-class NTA console
  • Server/agent fleet + OpenTelemetry APM still elsewhere
  • HA / multi-poller design as an Enterprise conversation or DIY
  • Alerting depth gated to Professional+ if you started on Community
  • ZenPlus trades a per-device license for productized NetFlow + NCM + maps + alerting, with Enterprise APM and HA when the NOC needs them

Honesty about Observium

  • This page is not “Observium is bad.” Observium is a credible, widely deployed network monitor with a clear Community → Professional → Enterprise ladder.
  • ZenPlus is for teams that want on-prem control and a broader productized NOC surface without assembling the rest of the stack themselves.

Observium is a strong network monitoring platform: deep SNMP autodiscovery, clean graphs, and (on paid editions) unlimited devices for a flat yearly fee. Many teams that start there later evaluate a broader on-prem NOC product—not because Observium “fails,” but because config backup, full NetFlow/NOC workflows, APM, and HA often live in adjacent tools (RANCID, flow collectors, separate consoles) while the estate keeps growing.

ZenPlus is the other shape of answer: an on-premises appliance for devices, interfaces, servers, NetFlow, maps, alerting, NCM, and (on Enterprise) OpenTelemetry APM—licensed per unique IP, with vendor onboarding and a single operator language.

Who this page is for

Use this comparison if most of these are true:

  1. Observium (Community or Professional) already covers SNMP polling and graphs, but NCM, NetFlow as a NOC workflow, APM, or HA are adjacent projects.
  2. Leadership wants a named vendor and a productized console for migrations and severity-1 ownership—not only subscription updates + paid support blocks.
  3. You still need on-premises telemetry and credentials—no SaaS NPM as the default.

If Observium’s network-first model matches how you work, the subscription is cheap enough at your scale, and you are happy owning RANCID/flow glue, stay. That is often the right call.

Comparison

Side-by-side: Observium editions vs productized on-prem NOC

Observium (typical path) ZenPlus (Zentryc)
License / software cost Community Free (QPL); Professional £250/yr; Enterprise £1,500/yr (observium.org, Sep 2026) Per unique IP (published tiers on /pricing/)
Device / port / sensor caps Unlimited on Community, Professional, and Enterprise Unlimited interfaces/elements per licensed IP
Updates Community: ~twice-yearly `.tar.gz`; Pro/Enterprise: realtime/daily SVN-style updates Vendor OTA / release channel with the license
Best-fit estate Network-centric SNMP with strong autodiscovery NOC that wants NPM + NetFlow + NCM (+ APM/HA) productized
Autodiscovery / SNMP Core strength (hundreds of OS/MIB families) First-class device + interface monitoring
Alerting Threshold / state / syslog alerting on Professional+ Productized alert center, rules, traps, channels
Traffic / flow Traffic accounting system on Professional+ (billing-oriented intervals); not the same as a full NTA module story NetFlow / sFlow / J-Flow / IPFIX analytics in Professional
NCM / config backup Adjacent (e.g. RANCID integration patterns)—not the product center of gravity Included in Professional
APM / OpenTelemetry Outside core Observium Included in Enterprise
Multi-server scale Enterprise edition Enterprise HA / multi-site remote sensors
Support Optional paid support/services; Enterprise includes hours Vendor onboarding + support with the license
Data plane Self-hosted on-prem (Linux) On-prem appliance / VM; Enterprise air-gap option
Free / trial Community free forever; charities/OSS may get Pro free Free 10 devices; 30-day full-tier trial

Observium list prices are cited from observium.org (September 2026). ZenPlus list is public on zentryc.com/pricing: Essentials $3/device/mo, Professional $5, Enterprise $7.50, billed annually; free 10 devices and 30-day full-tier trial.

Worked example

Worked example (TCO shape, not a quote war)

Illustrative estate: ~200 network devices, Observium Professional already graphing SNMP well, leadership asks for weekly config backup, NetFlow top-talkers in the same NOC UI, and a named support path.

Neither path is free in the real world. Pick whether you pay in flat subscription + glue or in per-device license + productized modules.

  • Observium path: Keep ~£250/yr Professional (list on observium.org). Budget operator time for RANCID/config ownership, flow tooling if traffic accounting is not enough, documentation, and on-call ownership. Hardware/VMs still cost money. Paid support blocks if you need vendor hours.
  • ZenPlus path: Professional list is $5/device/mo with volume discounts on /pricing/ (printed breaks at 100+ / 250+). NetFlow and NCM are in-tier. Ask sales for a 200-device quote and a side-by-side onboarding plan.

When to stay on Observium

Stay if most of these are true:

  • SNMP + graphs (+ Pro alerting / traffic accounting) cover the next planning horizon.
  • You already run RANCID (or similar) happily and do not need productized NCM in the same console.
  • Flat £250–£1,500/yr beats any per-device quote at your scale and your operators are fine owning the gaps.
  • Community/Pro support model is acceptable for how critical the box is.
  • You are network-first and do not need bundled APM/HA soon.

When ZenPlus is the better Observium alternative

  • You need productized NetFlow + NCM in the same console without a second ownership model.
  • Leadership wants a vendor path for migration, upgrades, and severity-1 ownership under one product family.
  • Enterprise needs APM (OpenTelemetry) and/or HA / air-gap under one license family.
  • You are consolidating Observium + RANCID + flow + another server/APM island.
  • You already evaluate ZenPlus vs LibreNMS/Zabbix/PRTG/SolarWinds and want the Observium comparison on the same honesty rules.

Migration

Migration sketch (60–90 days)

  1. Week 1–2: Inventory Observium devices, alert rules, traffic-accounting uses, and any RANCID/flow side tools. Stand up ZenPlus eval; mirror a non-prod site.
  2. Week 3–4: Dual-run critical sites—keep Observium as system of record; match availability and interface utilization.
  3. Week 5–8: Cut primary NOC workflows to ZenPlus; enable NetFlow and NCM on production tiers; migrate alert destinations.
  4. Week 9–12: Decommission or shrink Observium to a lab; document retention and report packs; optional ZenShield bundle if firewall logs are in scope.
  5. Talk to Zentryc for a device-count quote and whether coexistence or cutover fits the team.

FAQ

Observium alternative FAQ

For SNMP-centric network/server monitoring plus productized flow, NCM, maps, and alerts: yes, for many NOCs. It is not a claim that every Observium application module or MIB quirk has a 1:1 twin.
Community is free; Professional is £250/yr list for unlimited devices. That can win on software invoice. Compare operator time, RANCID/flow glue, and whether you need APM/HA productized.
Yes. ZenPlus deploys as an appliance/VM you control. Enterprise supports air-gapped patterns.
Included in Professional—not a separate billing-only traffic-accounting story and not a weekend collector hunt.
Included in Professional (not “use RANCID beside us”).
OpenTelemetry APM on Enterprise.
That is ZenShield, licensed separately—ask for a bundle quote.
Both are common network-first starting points. See LibreNMS alternative for the OSS-shaped version of this honesty.
