Datadog alternative

A Datadog alternative when the network must stay on-premises

Datadog is excellent at cloud and host observability. ZenPlus is the on-premises answer when devices, NetFlow, NCM, and telemetry must stay inside the boundary.

What you get

What this ZenPlus module gives your operations team

Purpose-built workflows that map to how operators actually work — not a placeholder surface, but a real, documented part of the ZenPlus console.

  • Owned network gear — switches, routers, firewalls, wireless controllers — where SNMP, traps, and flow matter more than Kubernetes spans
  • Security, sovereignty, or air-gap rules say monitoring data and credentials cannot sit in a SaaS tenant by default
  • One per-device price that includes interfaces; Professional includes NetFlow + NCM without a second SKU fight
  • OpenTelemetry APM on Enterprise without moving the whole NOC to SaaS

Live-system proof

  • Live ZenPlus operations, NetFlow, NCM, and alerting screens were captured from the evaluated system for this comparison.

Capabilities

Everything in Datadog alternative, organized the way you operate

Each group below is a working area of the module — from day-one setup to deep operational drill-downs.

Why teams evaluate ZenPlus next to Datadog

  • Procurement asked for a SolarWinds / PRTG / WhatsUp-class on-prem replacement and someone suggested Datadog as the “modern” option
  • Security wants credentials, configs, and flow inside the boundary
  • You want one per-device price that includes interfaces, and Professional that includes NetFlow + NCM without a second SKU fight
  • You still want modern APM via OpenTelemetry later—on Enterprise—without moving the whole NOC to SaaS

Datadog is excellent at cloud and host observability. Many NOC and network teams still evaluate it because leadership wants “one pane of glass.” The friction shows up later: network devices are not first-class citizens the way SNMP/NPM tools treat them, NetFlow and config backup are not the same product conversation as SolarWinds/PRTG replacements, and operational telemetry leaves your boundary unless you build an exception path.

ZenPlus is the other shape of answer: an on-premises appliance for devices, interfaces, servers, NetFlow, maps, alerting, NCM, and (on Enterprise) OpenTelemetry APM—licensed per unique IP, not per host + per module + per ingest.

Who this page is for

Use this comparison if most of these are true:

  1. You already run (or must run) owned network gear—switches, routers, firewalls, wireless controllers—where SNMP, traps, and flow matter more than Kubernetes spans.
  2. Security, sovereignty, or air-gap rules say monitoring data and credentials cannot sit in a SaaS tenant by default.
  3. You are tired of stacking Datadog Network Monitoring / NPM-style add-ons on top of Infrastructure and still lacking config backup and on-prem NOC workflows.

If your estate is mostly AWS/GCP/Azure workloads and SaaS apps with little L2/L3 gear, Datadog (or a peer cloud observability suite) is usually the better fit. Stay there. For the broader checklist, see on-prem vs SaaS network monitoring. Also see the SaaS-hybrid peer page LogicMonitor alternative.

Comparison

SaaS observability vs on-prem NOC

Datadog (typical path) ZenPlus (Zentryc)
Default data plane Vendor SaaS Customer appliance (Ubuntu LTS)
Air-gap Not the product story Enterprise supports air-gapped deploy
License shape Hosts, containers, custom metrics, logs, APM, network modules (stacking) Per unique IP; unlimited interfaces on that device
SNMP / device NPM Available; not the same depth/workflow as classic NPM suites Core network monitoring module
NetFlow / sFlow / IPFIX Network products / integrations; separate commercial conversation Included in Professional
Config backup / NCM Not a Datadog replacement for SolarWinds NCM Included in Professional
APM Native strength (traces, services) OpenTelemetry APM in Enterprise, same console
Free tier Trial / limited free Free forever: 10 devices
Trial Time-boxed SaaS trial 30-day full-feature on-prem eval, no card
Best fit Cloud-native and hybrid app estates On-prem / regulated NOC and campus/DC networks

Datadog packaging and list prices change often and are quote-driven by product mix. Do not treat any blog “starting at $X/host” as a procurement number without a current quote. ZenPlus list prices are published on zentryc.com/pricing (August 2026): Essentials from $3/device/mo, Professional $5, Enterprise $7.50, billed annually, 25-device minimum on paid plans, volume discounts at 100/250/500/1000+.

Worked example

Worked example (shape, not a quote war)

Estate: 120 network devices + 40 Windows/Linux servers that must stay on-prem for compliance. Leadership also wants some application traces.

If the same 160 endpoints are mostly cloud VMs with almost no SNMP fabric, Datadog will usually win on workflow. The crossover for ZenPlus is device-dense, on-prem-first estates.

  • Datadog path (illustrative): Infrastructure hosts for servers + Network Monitoring / device coverage + APM for a slice of services. Final invoice depends on host count, custom metrics, retention, and which network SKU you enable. Expect a multi-product SaaS bill and outbound telemetry.
  • ZenPlus path (published list): 160 unique IPs on Professional = 160 × $5 × 12 = $9,600/year before volume discount (15% at 250+ does not apply yet). NetFlow + NCM included. Move to Enterprise ($7.50/device/mo) if OpenTelemetry APM and HA are required: 160 × $7.50 × 12 = $14,400/year.

When to stay on Datadog

Stay if most of these are true:

  • Your pain is cloud spend, Kubernetes, and application traces, not campus switch ports.
  • Policy already allows operational telemetry in an approved SaaS region.
  • You already standardized engineering on Datadog and network is a thin edge case.
  • You need Datadog’s marketplace depth more than on-prem NCM and flow on the same box.

When ZenPlus is the better Datadog alternative

  • Procurement asked for a SolarWinds / PRTG / WhatsUp-class on-prem replacement and someone suggested Datadog as the “modern” option.
  • Security wants credentials, configs, and flow inside the boundary.
  • You want one per-device price that includes interfaces, and Professional that includes NetFlow + NCM without a second SKU fight.
  • You still want modern APM via OpenTelemetry later—on Enterprise—without moving the whole NOC to SaaS.

Migration

Migration sketch (90 days)

  1. Week 1–2: Stand up the ZenPlus appliance (Ubuntu 22.04/24.04), import credentials, discovery scan for the first site.
  2. Week 3–4: Dual-run critical SNMP devices and a NetFlow exporter; match alert noise against the Datadog network views you still trust.
  3. Week 5–8: Cut primary NOC alerting to ZenPlus; keep Datadog only where cloud APM still earns its keep (optional coexistence).
  4. Week 9–12: Enable NCM backups, maps, and executive reports; document the Datadog SKUs you can drop.
  5. Talk to Zentryc if you want a side-by-side for your device count and whether coexistence or full cutover makes sense.

FAQ

Datadog alternative FAQ

No. It replaces the on-prem network / NOC slice (and can cover servers + OTel APM on Enterprise). It is not a SaaS product analytics suite.
Yes. Common pattern: Datadog for cloud apps, ZenPlus for owned network and regulated sites.
Monitoring data stays on your appliance by default. OTA update check-in is a separate, signed package channel—see the installation KB.
